Students Get Taste of Professional Careers

The Construction Industry Council organised and delivered with the support of employers and representatives from professional bodies and Sector Skills Councils, two exciting Taster Days for year 9 and 10 students from the Leicestershire region.

The events, hosted by Leicester College on 13 April and South Leicester College on 7th June, were sponsored by Aim Higher Leicestershire with a general theme of Apprenticeships as a route into Higher Education.

In total approximately 100 eager students participated in a carousel of “hands on” one hour long activities throughout the day including;
• Erecting a cable stayed bridge
• Designing their ideal town
• Learning about construction site job roles
• Learning how the professional teams interact on a project
• Raising their awareness of careers available and progression routes

Both days were enthusiastically supported by employers, volunteers and ambassadors from the Construction Industry Council, CITB-ConstructionSkills, Asset Skills, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Royal Town Planning Institute, the Landscape Institute and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The Leicester events followed on from a recent and successful event at Derby College and Shirebrook Academy in Nottinghamshire. Taster Days are an exciting and successful collaborative approach to increasing awareness about professional careers in construction and raising aspirations.
